Julie Zhuo joined Facebook at 22 as one of its earliest product designers and rose to VP of Product Design, overseeing design for more than a billion users across Facebook’s core products. She spent 14 years at the company before leaving to co-found Sundial, a software company focused on management tools.
Her book, The Making of a Manager (2019), draws on her experience being thrust into a management role with no formal training — a situation she argues is the norm, not the exception. The book became a widely referenced guide for first-time managers in the tech industry, known for its candor about the confusion and self-doubt that accompany early leadership.
Zhuo is also known for her long-running blog and newsletter on design and management, which built a substantial audience before the book’s publication. Her work focuses on the practical side of leadership: how to run effective meetings, give feedback, hire well, and build a team culture — grounded in the specific context of fast-moving tech organizations.
